After 33 years of dishing out some of the Valley’s best New York-style pizzas, Vic Buono is calling it quits.
Buono announced Tuesday night on social media he will retire after closing his Nicantoni’s Pizza in Gilbert on Sunday, May 30.
‘‘Over the course of the years, I’ve made some great friends and had the chance to work with some great people,’’ he writes. ‘‘I’ve also had the chance to experience today’s grandchildren coming from my original store’s patrons.’’
The New York native was just 25 when he founded his eponymous Buono’s Pizza (now Amici Pizza) in southwest Mesa in 1988.
After selling Buono’s, he bought Islands Pizza in Gilbert in 2003, renaming it Nicantoni’s – a combination of his two kids’ names, Dominic and Toni.
In 2016, Buono moved Nicantoni’s to the JD’s Homestead center on Gilbert Road between Elliot and Warner.
