Technology allows SanTan Brewing to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 50%

Chandler-based SanTan Brewing not only is the state’s largest craft brewery, it’s now the first to employ some new technology to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions.

Carbon dioxide is a natural by-product of the fermentation process. SanTan produces about 1,000 metric tons of the gas each year, part of the Earth’s greenhouse gas emissions.

SanTan, however, recently invested in an Earthly Labs System that recaptures the carbon dioxide and repurposes it to carbonate SanTan beers.

In addition, the brewery has installed a nitrogen generator that eliminates the use of carbon dioxide for purging cans, kegs, and tanks of oxygen before filling them.

Combined, the two new pieces of equipment reduce SanTan’s carbon dioxide emissions by more than 50% per year.

“I’m really proud to be able to take this step towards creating a more hopeful future by doing our part to reduce carbon emissions and create a cleaner environment,’’ SanTan founder Anthony Canecchia says.

The public can observe the new technology while touring SanTan’s production facility.
