The venerable Valley chain Macayo’s Mexican Food has opened its eighth restaurant on the northwest corner of the 101 and Shea in Scottsdale.
It takes over the space that formerly housed the brewpub Scottsdale Beer Company, which closed last year.
One of the Valley’s oldest restaurants, Macayo’s was founded by Woody and Victoria Johnson in 1946, when it was known as Woody’s El Nido.
The Johnsons’ children sold most of the chain to Mesa-based Kind Hospitality in 2019, only keeping restaurants in downtown Phoenix (since closed) and downtown Tempe.
Kind is working on a ninth Macayo’s at Phoenix Mesa Gateway Airport.
