Gilbert council votes against proposed 4-story downtown building

By Jess Harter Wednesday, August 18, 2021

The Gilbert Town Council voted 7-0 Tuesday night against a zoning exemption to allow construction of a four-story building between Norwood Furniture and The Farmhouse in downtown Gilbert.

The background: The family that owns Norwood wants to construct the building on three vacant lots near the town’s iconic water tower on the southwest corner of Gilbert and Page. It would have a restaurant on the ground floor, offices on the second and third, and a rooftop bar.

The issue: The proposed Brundrett Building’s 68-foot height exceeds the Heritage District’s 55-foot limit.

What’s next? The council will delay reconsidering the project for six months so a new design can be submitted.
