Cheba Hut closes original Tempe location for several weeks of renovations

Cheba Hut, the national chain of cannabis-themed sub shops that began in Tempe, has closed its original location on the northeast corner of Hardy and University for several weeks of renovations.

The chain: Scott Jennings created the concept, featuring ‘‘toasted’’ subs, chips, Rice Krispy treats, and other munchies, in 1998. (Despite the sandwich shop’s theme, no actual cannabis products are used in the food.) Cheba Hut now has 45 locations in 14 states.

The timeline: The Tempe location closed with little warning in August. The company hopes to finish renovations and reopen by late October.
