Ay, Chabela in downtown Phoenix to close Sunday just month after opening

By Jess Harter Thursday, November 10, 2022

Ay, Chabela, a Mexican seafood inspired restaurant with an agave-based cocktail program, announced it will close Sunday after just a month in business in downtown Phoenix.

The history: Brothers Andrew and Nick Renteria ran the Chubasco Tacos food stand before rebranding and launching Ay, Chabela with Sam Olguin (Killer Whale Sex Club).

  • The space near the southeast corner of Roosevelt and Seventh Street formerly was home to Chez Gregory.

The quote: ‘‘There’s not really much to say other than we gave it our best shot. Nick and I will be taking a much needed break from business and focusing on our overall health and wellness,’’ Andrew Renteria wrote on social media.
