Recreo Cantina transforms into Mexican concept in downtown Chandler

Goodbye, Recreo. Hola, Recreo Cantina.

The playground-themed restaurant and bar in downtown Chandler is celebrating its one-year anniversary with a name tweak and a menu overhaul.

Gone are the scattershot ‘‘globally inspired’’ dishes –  the Philly cheesesteak and Peking pig, the hummus and burrata, the Cajun dip and the pasta Alfredo.

As you might guess by the newly appended name, the menu now focuses on tacos, burritos, enchiladas, quesadillas, and fajitas.

There also are a dozen margaritas and a new mixed drink, The Sabrosita, made with Tito’s vodka, watermelon liqueur, orange juice, and lime.

Popular elements on the huge back patio, such as a swing-set seats at the bar, remain.

Mexican food isn’t exactly new to the 10,000-square-foot space. El Zocalo Mexican Grille occupied it for 20 years before closing in May 2020.

Open: 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Sunday-Thursday, 11 a.m.-midnight Friday-Saturday.
