Latha opens in downtown Phoenix, celebrates Africa & the African diaspora

Latha, a restaurant and bar that features dishes from Africa, the Caribbean, Brazil, and the southern U.S., has opened at Heritage Square near the northwest corner of Seventh Street and Washington in downtown Phoenix.

The space: Located in the historic Silva House, Latha describes itself as ‘‘a shared immersive experience with food, drinks, music, and culture.’’ Everything relates to Africa and its diaspora.

The food: Contemporary seasonal dishes based on historical recipes, including:

  • Whipped goat cheese with black garlic honey ($15);
  • Piri piri wings ($16);
  • Harissa roasted salmon ($34);
  • Berbere fried chicken ($30);
  • Jerk pork chop (pictured, $34);
  • Suya flank steak ($38).

Did you know: Latha means flavor in Swahli.

Hours: 5-9 p.m. Wednesday-Thursday, 5-11 p.m. Friday-Saturday, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday.
