🍔 Famous 66 American Tavern, a roadhouse-style restaurant and bar honoring iconic highway Route 66, soft-opens at 3 p.m. today at Gilbert Town Square on Gilbert Road between Warner and Ray roads.
Who’s behind it?
Scottsdale-based Square One Concepts, whose other brands include Cold Beers & Cheeseburgers, Bourbon & Bones, Wasted Grain, and Nook Kitchen.
Square One opened a very similar concept, Famous 48 AZ Tavern, honoring Arizona’s status as the 48th state, in Scottsdale in 2019. (That location eventually may be rebranded as a Famous 66.)
What’s on the menu?
The elevated comfort food menu offers Southwest-inspired appetizers, salads, burgers, sandwiches, pizzas, steaks, and other entrees.
Highlights include Four Peaks Nachos, Gilbert Chopped Salad, Nacho Mama pizza, Blazing Saddles Burger, and Border Bowl.
Sweet treats include customizable milk shakes and cookie ice cream sandwiches.
The full bar has 20 beers on tap and more in cans/bottles, wines by the glass or bottle, specialty cocktails, margaritas, sangria, and more.
The space
The 6,200-square-foot interior is decorated with vintage road signs, old gas station memorabilia, and antique car grills.
Is the building jinxed?
Famous 66 will be the building’s sixth concept in 15 years, following in the footsteps of (in reverse order from the most recent) Howler’s, Steak & Stone, American Taphouse, BoomBozz Pizza, and Boston’s Gourmet Pizza.
