🇲🇽 Cielo Rojo, a new sibling concept to 22-year-old Mexican seafood restaurant Mariscos Playa Hermosa in Phoenix, has opened near the northeast corner of 16th Street and McDowell in Phoenix’s Coronado neighborhood.

What’s on the menu?

Most dishes on the menu at Cielo Rojo (Spanish for ‘‘red sky’’) are from the landlocked state of Guanajuato in central Mexico, where owners Jose and Maria Maldonado are from.

Highlights include a 21-ingredient mole negro with half-chicken ($25), sour orange marinated slow-roasted pork ($25), rajas con crema on house-made nixtamal corn tortilla (pictured lower middle, $10), and lamb shank braised in spicy pulla chiles ($25, lower right).

A full bar offers Mexican cocktails, wines, and beers.

The space

Formerly home to La Santísima Gourmet Taco Shop, which closed in December 2022.
