🌮 Illegal Pete’s, a Colorado-based chain of fast-casual Mexican restaurants, has closed its only Valley location on Mill Avenue in downtown Tempe.
- The restaurant opened in October 2018 in a space formerly home to My Big Fat Greek Restaurant near the southeast corner of Mill and Fifth Street.
What happened? A notice on the door gives no reason for the closing, which comes just a few days before classes start at nearby ASU.
The background: The restaurant’s name generated controversy before its opening, but owner Pete Turner claimed it simply referred to a ‘‘countercultural atmosphere.’’
