Shocking news this morning for Arizona’s food and drink community: Anthony Canecchia – the founder of SanTan Brewing & Distilling, Arizona’s largest craft brewery – passed away Saturday. He was 51.
‘‘We are deeply saddened to receive news of the passing of our very own Anthony Canecchia, founder of SanTan Brewing Company, a pioneer in his field,’’ the Chandler brewery and distillery posted on social media this morning.
‘‘We ask for your patience and understanding as we make necessary arrangements and navigate the journey of grief. Out of respect for his family, friends, and colleagues, we kindly ask that you respect their privacy during this difficult time.’’
No other details regarding Canecchia’s death have been released.
After working for eight years at Four Peaks Brewing in Tempe, Canecchia launched SanTan in downtown Chandler in 2007. In 2013, he opened a 35,000-square-foot production brewery on Warner Road, just east of Arizona Avenue, in Chandler.
When Four Peaks was purchased by AB InBev in 2015, SanTan assumed the title of Arizona’s largest craft brewery.
In 2018, SanTan introduced its first spirits – Sacred Stave American Single Malt Whiskey, SanTan Vodka, and Kaffir Lime Vodka. A year later, it opened Spirit House craft cocktail bar next to the brewpub in downtown Chandler.
