Filthy Animal – the latest concept from Pretty Decent Concepts, the team behind Phoenix hot spots Wren & Wolf, Chico Malo, and Carry On – has soft-opened in downtown Tempe.
The wood-fired restaurant and its soon-to-open sibling cocktail bar Drop Dead Gorgeous have taken over the former P.F. Chang’s building on the northwest corner of Mill and University.
Filthy Animal’s menu promises what it calls ‘‘a feast of fire feeding the primal animal within.’’
Highlights among the small plates are fire-roasted bone marrow ($18), pibil beef short rib dumplings ($14), cheddar and kimchi croquettes ($16), and grilled oysters with gochujang butter ($19).
Steaks are the centerpieces of the menu, ranging from a $38 skirt steak to a $160 32-ounce bone-in ribeye finished tableside. Other mains include lemongrass half chicken ($36), spicy grilled whole lobster ($65), and ancho chile glazed pork chop ($32).
For those with smaller appetities (or smaller budgets), skewers come with a choice of chicken, shrimp, or oyster mushrooms ($14-$16) and include fried rice.
Soft-opening hours are 4-9 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and 4-11 p.m. Friday-Saturday. Lunch and brunch coming soon.
