Don Guerra’s Barrio Bagel & Slice, a bakery and pizza slice drive-through from the James Beard Award-winning Tucson baker, has opened in Gilbert.
The new concept takes over the former Sonic Drive-In just south of Arizona Wilderness Brewing near the southeast corner of Arizona and Guadalupe.
Guerra started Barrio Bread in his Tucson garage in 2009. In 2022, he was named the country’s Outstanding Baker at the Beard Awards, the culinary world’s version of the Oscars.
Since 2023, Guerra, a Tempe native, has partnered with Hayden Flour Mills to bake and sell Barrio breads weekly at the mills’ kitchen on the northeast corner of Arizona and Guadalupe.
Bagels & Slices sells bagels and breakfast sandwiches ($4.50-$8.50) in the morning, and sandwiches on bagels or bread ($9-$14.25) and Sicilian-style pizzas on focaccia ($6.50-$7.75) for lunch and dinner.
The concept is a partnership between Guerra and Valley restaurateur Oren Molovinsky, who has extensive quick-service experience, including with Chompies and Freddie’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers.
Molovinsky also launched the well-regarded Farmboy Market, Meats & Sandwiches, which opened in south Chandler in 2018 but closed during the covid pandemic.
Barrio Bagel & Slice is open 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 7 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday.
