Cheese ’n Stuff, a small sandwich shop in midtown Phoenix, is closing April 30 after 76 years in business.
The deli, located on the northwest corner of Central and Camelback, began in 1949 as a cheese shop. It added sandwiches after it was sold to Emil Zawatski in 1972.
In 2011, Cheese ’n Stuff served its millionth sandwich – a Rueben sub – to customer C.J. Hassett.
The business currently is run by Emil’s son, Stanley, and daughter, Susan. Stanley’s daughter Crystal also works at the deli.
Stanley Zawatski, 66, says he’s selling in order to spend more time with his grandchildren. His daughter just finished nursing school.
Cheese ’n Stuff is open 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Friday and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday.
No word yet on what is taking over the space.
