The Rec Pizza & Detroit Eats closes after lease not renewed in Peoria

🍕 The Rec Pizza & Detroit Eats, a popular Peoria pizzeria specializing in Detroit-style pies, has abruptly closed.

‘‘Unfortunately, we were notified that our lease would not be renewed and therefore today is the last day for The Rec Pizza,’’ the restaurant posted on social media Sunday.

‘‘We will be open while supplies last today and we are beyond grateful for our customers and friendships we have made. Thank you to those that have been loyal to us and we will update everyone if we find a new location.’’

The pizzeria, which was located on the northwest corner of 99th Avenue and Beardsley, was launched by Mark Gluck. It was sold in 2020, closed for several months during the covid pandemic, but was sold again and reopened in 2022.

The rectangular deep-dish pizzas featured an airy crust, crispy edges, and sauce ladled on top of the toppings and cheese. They had Detroit-influenced names like The 8-Mile, The Trammell, and The Hockey Town.

In addition, the menu offered other Michigan favorites, such as coney dogs and Faygo sodas.
