El Güero Canelo to close landmark location in Tucson

🌭 One of Arizona’s most famous restaurants is closing. El Güero Canelo will shutter its original South 12th Street location in Tucson on July 7.

The Mexican restaurant, which introduced Tucson residents to the iconic Sonoran hot dog in 1993 and draws visitors from around the world, received a James Beard Award in the American Classics category in 2018.

‘‘Thank you to all our loyal customers who’ve supported us throught the years,’’ the restaurant posted on social media. ‘‘This location holds so many great memories because of you.’’

The good news? Owner Daniel Contreras will relaunch his flagship in a new, larger building next door. It will share the building with Contreras’ butcher shop Carniceria El Güero Canelo.

The new building is expected to open by the end of July. In the meantime, El Güero Canelo has two other Tucson locations.
