Ex-CRUjiente chef Hinojosa brings puffy tacos to TEXAZ Grill

👨‍🍳 Two Valley icons are teaming up for one delicious collaboration.

Chef Rich Hinojosa from the late CRUjiente Tacos has joined forces with Texaz Grill, the central Phoenix roadhouse celebrating its 40th anniversary, to introduce authentic San Antonio-style puffy tacos to the menu today.

Born and raised in San Antonio, Hinojosa grew up on the crisp-meets-chewy texture of the region’s signature fried masa shells and jumped at the chance to bring them to the Valley.

The puffy tacos (pictured in generic file photo) anchor an all-new Tex-Mex pocket menu at Texaz Grill with fillings like picadillo ground beef, green chile pork, carne guisada, and refried beans and cheese.

Each starts with nixtamalized corn dough that’s lightly fried just long enough to puff and crisp, creating what Hinojosa calls “the perfect vehicle for true Texas flavor.”

Texaz Grill managing partner Greg Linaman says the idea sprang from his admiration for CRUjiente Tacos and Hinojosa’s Texas roots.

“The puffy tacos are incredible – even better than we imagined,” he says. “They’re the perfect addition to our 40-year anniversary menu.”
