Soup season in the Valley may be short, but it’s real. When you want something warming, restorative, or just deeply flavorful, here are seven of my favorites:
Pozole Rojo at Gallo Blanco
928 E Pierce St, Phoenix
A cold-weather comfort bowl (pictured) built on tender pork shoulder, hominy, and a deep guajillo-and-ancho chile broth. It arrives with the full spread – cabbage, radish, cilantro, white onion, lime, oregano, and warm tortillas – so you can season to taste.
French Onion Soup at Zinc Bistro
15034 N Scottsdale Rd, Scottsdale
Zinc’s version is textbook: deeply caramelized onions; a dark, savory beef broth; and a proper lid of melted six-month AOP Gruyère. It’s rich without being sloppy, and consistently one of the most ordered items on the menu.
Matzah Ball Soup at Chompie’s
Locations in Phoenix, Scottsdale, Chandler & Glendale
Oversized, fluffy matzah balls swimming in golden chicken broth have made this a Valley staple for decades. It’s nostalgic, restorative, and still one of the best Jewish deli soups in the Southwest.
Tom Yum at Glai Baan
2333 E Osborn Rd, Phoenix
This isn’t a standard tom yum. Glai Baan’s tom yum moo layers sour, spicy broth with minced pork from The Meat Shop, bouncy fish balls, peanuts, bean sprouts, egg, and rice noodles. A perfect example of how this restaurant elevates Thai classics without losing authenticity.
Cream of Leek Soup at Cornish Pasty
Locations in Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe & Mesa
Silky, savory, and deeply comforting, Cornish Pasty’s cream of leek soup is deceptively simple and consistently excellent. It’s rich without being heavy and pairs perfectly with a half pasty – one of the Valley’s best cold-weather one-two punches.
Green Chile Stew at Richardson’s
6335 N 16th St, Phoenix
Admittedly more stew than soup, this New Mexico-inspired bowl is a cult favorite for a reason. Slow-cooked pork, roasted green chiles, and a rich broth make it one of the Valley’s most craveable cold-weather dishes.
Spicy Corn Chowder at Gadzooks
Locations in Gilbert & Phoenix
Another cult-favorite, this chowder balances sweet corn with real chile heat and a creamy base that doesn’t dull the spice. It’s bold, craveable, and unmistakably Gadzooks – a soup people can plan entire meals around.
