Old Heidelberg Bakery to close April 30 after 57 years in Phoenix

🍞 One of Phoenix’s most beloved institutions is baking its last batch. Old Heidelberg Bakery, the family-owned German gem that has been turning out handmade pretzels, strudel, dark breads, and hard rolls since 1969, will close its doors for good on April 30.

Owner Chris Laukenmann and her niece Emily have carried on the tradition started by Chris’s parents, Heinz and Eleonore, who immigrated from Stuttgart and opened the bakery – making it a multigenerational cornerstone of the Camelback East neighborhood.

The bakery, which moved to its current location on the northeast corner of Indian School and 22nd Street in 1996, blamed the closure on inflation and customers eating less bread.

There’s still time to say danke and stock up on your favorites. Old Heidelberg is open 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
