🚫 The contraction of a Valley institution continues.
Serrano’s Mexican Restaurants has announced its location on the northwest corner of McKellips and Gilbert roads in north Mesa will close on May 16 after more than 34 years.
The family-owned chain cited declining sales, rising operating costs, and months of road construction out front as factors in the decision.
It’s been a difficult stretch for the Serrano family. In June 2024, they closed their flagship downtown Chandler location – a restaurant with roots going back to 1919, when the family opened the Serrano Brothers Popular Store.
That same summer, they shuttered the year-old Pronto fast-casual concept in south Tempe.
The McKellips closing leaves the family with just two locations.
Those two remaining restaurants – at Power and Southern in east Mesa and Ellsworth and Sierra Park in Queen Creek – remain open, and some McKellips staff members are expected to transfer there.
