🌮 Scottsdale favorite Cien Agaves has planted its second flag in west Chandler, opening in the former Smokin Fins space southeast of the intersection of I-10 and Ray Road.
The new outpost marks the first expansion for the tequila-and-Mexican-food concept since it debuted in Old Town Scottsdale back in 2007. The deal was facilitated by The Restaurant Brokers.
Owners Roque Jimenez and Robert Schulken built the original location into a neighborhood staple, and nearly two decades later they’re betting that the same formula – big agave spirit selection, lively patio energy, classic Mexican fare – will resonate with Southeast Valley diners.
The taco stand is the heart of the menu, with options like crispy rolled tinga chicken tacos topped with tomatillo salsa and cotija cheese, alongside beer-battered shrimp tossed in a sweet-and-spicy island sauce. Rounding things out are hearty salads, burritos, and bowls built around Mexican rice, black beans, and sautéed vegetables.
Jimenez and Schulken run the show under their company, Backbar Hospitality Management, which has quietly built out a small but well-regarded local restaurant portfolio. Beyond Cien Agaves, the pair also own Nello’s Pizzeria + Italian Kitchen in Ahwatukee and Ghost Ranch in south Tempe.
Cien Agave is open 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and 11 a.m.-midnight Friday-Saturday.
