The Brew Box takes over ex-Sweetwater’s in North Scottsdale

☕️ A Peoria coffee shop known for its organic beans and creative matcha menu is expanding to the east side of the Valley. Daniel and Sierra Medina, owners of The Brew Box Coffee Company, have purchased Sweetwaters Coffee & Tea on the northwest corner of Loop 101 and Raintree in North Scottsdale, marking the second location for their local brand.

From Peoria to Scottsdale

The Brew Box first opened its doors in Peoria in 2024, quickly building a loyal following for its commitment to organic, small-batch coffee. The shop sources its beans from Grounds for Change, a roaster that ships pesticide- and chemical-free coffee out of Peru every few days to keep things fresh – a detail that’s become central to the brand’s identity.

Beyond coffee, the Peoria location (pictured) has also earned a reputation for its rotating menu of specialty matcha drinks, including a house-made banana purée matcha and a mango sticky rice matcha, served up in a warm, modern, ‘‘boho’’ space filled with greenery.

That same organic, quality-first approach is coming to Scottsdale, along with The Brew Box’s signature food and tea offerings.

A husband-and-wife team

The Brew Box is very much a family business. Daniel Medina brings decades of hospitality experience to the venture through his background with Kind Hospitality, while his wife, Sierra, leads the team’s day-to-day coffee program, drawing on her own expertise from years spent at Starbucks.

Together, the Medinas have built The Brew Box around hands-on ownership, quality ingredients, and genuine community connection – values they’re now bringing to a second storefront.

Filling big shoes

The Scottsdale space carries some serious coffee pedigree. Sweetwaters Coffee & Tea opened at the location in 2020, brought to Arizona by David Greenberg and his family. It was the only Sweetwaters franchise location in the entire state and quickly became a highly regarded neighborhood favorite.

Sweetwaters closed a few days before the Medinas finalized the purchase of the space last week in a deal facilitated by Doreen Gorman of We Sell Restaurants.

The Medinas are now in the process of transforming the interior with The Brew Box’s own decor and design touches, and a grand opening is being planned for early October.
