3 Downtown Chandler restaurants abruptly close – temporarily?

🚫 Downtown Chandler diners got an unwelcome surprise this week as three popular restaurants – Tipsy Egg, The Uncommon, and Recreo Cantina – all shut their doors without warning or explanation.

No signage. No social media posts. No official word from any of the three restaurants themselves. Just dark dining rooms and confused regulars showing up to locked doors.

What connects all three closures is ownership. Niels Kreipke of Desert Viking Development owns the buildings that house all three restaurants, and he’s also a co-owner in each of the businesses themselves.

Reached Tuesday night, Kreipke confirmed the closures but downplayed concerns that any of the three are shutting down for good.

‘‘The owners are just sorting through various options right now,’’ Kreipke said, adding that all three restaurants are only temporarily closed. He said he expects all of them to reopen by this weekend.

As for what prompted three separate restaurants to close simultaneously, Kreipke didn’t offer specifics. He said a more detailed announcement will come ‘‘when some decisions are reached,’’ but didn’t elaborate on what those decisions might involve.

About the 3 restaurants

Tipsy Egg opened in May 2022 on the southeast corner of Arizona and Boston as a mid-century-inspired, cocktail-forward brunch concept. The daily breakfast-and-lunch spot built its reputation on an elevated brunch menu with playful, bold-flavored dishes like Mom’s Pot Roast Benedict and Chinese Chicken Salad, along with a drink menu heavy on mimosa flights, Bloody Marys, and specialty cocktails such as the Early Mornin’ Margarita.

The Uncommon, Tipsy Egg’s sister concept next door, opened in July 2022, as an eatery, bar, and arcade. The nostalgia-driven space packed in throwback attractions like a Zoltar machine, shuffleboard, Skee-Ball, pinball, ping pong tables, a photo booth, and bubble hockey, paired with scratch-made comfort food with pop-culture-inspired names, including the Sloan Peterson smoked salmon BLT and the Inigo Montoya burger.

Recreo Cantina has the longest and most winding history of the three. It originally opened as simply Recreo before rebranding around its one-year anniversary in January 2023 into Recreo Cantina, shifting to a Mexican-focused menu and cocktail program along San Marcos Place. Its patio – complete with a bar swing set for adults and twinkling-light-strung outdoor seating – is often called one of downtown’s best.

All three restaurants share more than a landlord. Kreipke’s Desert Viking Development has been central to Downtown Chandler’s broader revival, and Kreipke’s team brought Tipsy Egg, The Uncommon, and Recreo to the area within months of each other, part of what he’s described as turning downtown into a place where ‘‘the sidewalks are alive at night.’’

That shared ownership is exactly why three separate closures happening in the same week raises eyebrows.
