Scott’s Generations to close after 37 years in central Phoenix

One of the Valley’s last old-school Jewish delis is hanging up the slicer. Scott’s Generations announced it will serve its final meals on Sunday, Oct. 25, ending a run that began in June 1989.

Father and son Gene and Scott Snyder opened the deli shortly after the family moved to Arizona from New York, aiming to bring an authentic New York deli to the desert.

Located on the northeast corner of Glendale and Seventh Avenue, it became a Phoenix fixture, known for overstuffed sandwiches, homemade soups, smoked fish, knishes, and cheesecake.

The announcement did not give a reason for the closure.

3+ decades of memories

‘‘We have watched kids who came in with their parents grow up and bring in children of their own,’’ Scott Snyder said. ‘‘That is what makes closing this chapter so difficult.’’

A third generation eventually joined the business: Scott’s son Ross, who grew up behind the counter.

‘‘Some of my earliest memories are standing on a milkcrate behind the cash register,’’ he said.

Last chance to visit

Until the final day, the Snyders are inviting regulars to stop by for a favorite meal and to share a few memories.
