New Garden, Phoenix’s oldest Chinese restaurant, closed for good Tuesdau night after 84 years on Central Avenue and Hadley Street in south Phoenix. Kam Yee “Mary” Tse founded it in 1942 in the city’s old Chinatown, and generations of extended family have run it since.
Chef and co-owner Thomas Tang announced plans to close earlier this month, saying his relatives were too old to continue, though he hopes a possible new tenant will keep the heritage alive.
The family claims to have invented the giant egg roll. Regulars also swore by the barbecue pork noodles, chop suey, and egg foo young.
