🚫 Carly’s Bistro, a fixture on Roosevelt Row in downtown Phoenix for nearly two decades, will close May 3, it announced on social media.
The Mediterranean-style bistro, opened by Carla Wade Logan in 2005, was one of the first restaurants on Roosevelt Row, which has become a dining and entertainment hotspot.
No explanation was given for the decision to close, but the bistro asked customers to ‘‘please stop by and say hello and enjoy your favourites from Carly’s’’ until then.
🚫 Arizona BBQ Company, a six-year-old establishment on the northwest corner of Val Vista and Ray in Gilbert, announced on social media it will close this Saturday after six-plus years in business.

‘‘Despite exhaustive efforts to adjust our business model and reduce costs, the persistent downturn in business, exacerbated by the current economic climate and continual rising operational costs, makes it no longer a viable option for Arizona BBQ Company to remain open,’’ owners Mark and Colette Nichols wrote.

🚫 Wow, less than 48 hours after telling me about a bunch of upcoming promotions, Via 313 Pizza has closed its only Arizona location after just eight months in business.
The Texas-based chain of Detroit-style pizzerias made its Grand Canyon State debut June 26 on the northeast corner of Rural and University.
A voicemail greeting says the location can’t answer the phone because it’s ‘‘busy making dough,’’ but a sign on the door says it’s closed permanently.
🍨 Phoenix’s historic Mary Coyle Ol’ Fashion Ice Cream, which has occupied several different locations over its 73 years, appears to have closed permanently.
The business seemingly shut down for good in 2019, but was resurrected by a new owner and reopened at a new location – the Tapestry on Central condominiums on the northwest corner of Central and Encanto.
It quietly closed ‘‘temporarily’’ in December and the space now is listed for lease.
After more than a century, Chandler’s oldest family-owned business is closing. Serrano’s Mexican Restaurants has announced its flagship location in downtown Chandler will close June 1.
The three other locations – two in Mesa and one in Queen Creek – will remain open, as will fast-casual spinoff Pronto by Serrano’s in Tempe.
The reason
‘‘With the influx of new restaurants downtown, we’ve seen a decline in business over the past few years, and with more than 13,000 square feet, it’s also our most expensive restaurant to operate,” CEO Rick Serrano explains.
The property, which includes a parking lot on the southwest corner of Boston and Washington, has been put up for sale.
The history
Serrano’s was founded as the Serrano Brothers Popular Store in Chandler in 1919. Ernie and Eva Serrano transformed it into a Sonora-style Mexican restaurant in 1979.
Today, the business is operated by Ernie and Eva’s seven children.
🚫 Taco Culture, a family-run Mexican restaurant, has closed after four years on the southeast corner of 32nd Street and Chandler Boulevard in Ahwatukee.
In a social media post, owner Raully Herrera cites his wife’s heath issues as the reason for the closure.
‘‘We sold to a great family that will give this place time and dedication,’’ Herrera writes. ‘‘Please come and support them.’’
🚫 Sr. Ozzy’s Tacos y Mariscos, a local concept specializing in Mexican seafood and sushi, has closed its west Chandler location on the southeast corner of Kyrene and Ray after 11 months.
No reason was given for the closure.
Two older Valley locations – in Phoenix and Glendale – remain open.
🍍 The Golden Pineapple Craft Lounge, which ‘‘temporarily’’ closed for repairs last fall, will not reopen, a former manager has confirmed.
The Golden Pineapple opened in 2020, taking over the former Italian restaurant Quartiere on the west side of Mill between Broadway and Southern. (The building previously was home to Riazzi’s Italian Garden for 72 years.)
🍔 Matty G’s Steakburgers has closed its two-year-old Gilbert location at the Rivulon center near the northeast corner of Gilbert and the Loop 202 due to owner Matt Gordon’s ongoing health issues.
