3 Arizona breweries win medals at World Beer Cup

Three Arizona breweries – Four Peaks, SanTan, and Lumberyard – won medals Saturday night at the World Beer Cup in Philadelphia.

Considered the most prestigious beer competition in the world, the World Beer Cup is held every two years. This year, nearly 2,000 breweries from 55 countries competed in 96 style categories.

Four Peaks’ flagship Kilt Lifter, the best-selling beer in Arizona, took the gold medal for Scottish-Style Ale. It is the Tempe brewery’s fourth World Cup medalist, joining Hop Knot IPA, 8th Street Ale, and Sunbru Kolsch from previous years.

SanTan’s Mr. Pineapple, created in 2010 for the brewpub’s annual luau, grabbed the silver medal in Fruit Wheat Beer. The Chandler brewery’s seasonal-turned-mainstay finished second to Blue Moon’s First Peach Ale.

Lumberyard’s Knotty Pine Pale Ale, which the Flagstaff brewery formerly called Lumberyard American Pale Ale, earned the bronze medal in American-Style Pale Ale, one of the most crowded categories.
