Arizona Wilderness Brewing in Gilbert will begin selling 32-ounce cans of beer – starting with its flagship Refuge IPA – on the first of the year.

Although other breweries offer the can/growler hybrids known as ‘‘crowlers,’’ Arizona Wilderness will fill theirs in advance, not to order.

‘‘The cans will be sold over the bar as a retail source and not as a to-go,‘‘ says brewery co-founder Jonathan Buford. ‘‘In other words, this isn’t a growler.

‘‘We are monitoring this to make sure perfect beer is going into these cans.’’

Only a limited amount of one beer will be available at a time.

‘‘We will work on five brands, rotating on a seasonal basis,’’ Buford says. ‘‘This is a first-come, first-served basis. When they run out, they are out. We will meet demand more over time.’’

Prices and limits have not been determined yet, but Buford hopes to have 500 cans of Refuge ready by Jan. 1.

The brewery still is awaiting label approval from the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB).

The brewery’s highly prized seasonal American Presidential Stout will be available in the 32-ounce cans during Arizona Beer Week in February.
