My Nana’s Salsa Challenge moves to new Phoenix site Saturday

My Nana’s Salsa Challenge has a new home: The fest’s 30th incarnation will be held 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday at Steele Indian School Park in central Phoenix.

For the past several years, the one-day competition had drawn around 20,000 visitors to Tempe Beach Park.

Salsa chefs compete in three divisions – independent, professional, and restaurant – for a grand prize of $1,000 and a retail opportunity with El Sol Foods.

Tickets are $15 at the gate ($12 online through Friday) and include all-you-can-eat salsa and chips. Attendees also vote on a crowd favorite. (A panel of judges determines the other awards.)

As usual, the Salsa Challenge will include a margarita mix-off (12:30-3:30 p.m.), two stages of live music, a cornhole toss tournament, and a kids zone.

New this year will be a salsa marketplace where attendees can purchase retail-ready sauces.
