Early-morning blaze destroys Doc & Eddy’s in Tempe, owners say they’ll rebuild

A huge fire broke out around 6 a.m. today and destroyed longtime Tempe sports bar Doc & Eddy’s near the northeast corner of Rural and Baseline in Tempe.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but Charlotte and Patrick Karnos, who’ve owned Doc & Eddy’s since the 1980s, say the fire started in the bar’s office.

“It was a cigarette in a trash can, from what I understand,” Charlotte Karnos tells AZCentral.com. “Staff was closing when it started. They tried to put it out … but it got in the attic.”

The large building, she says, is a total loss.

“Absolutely we’ll rebuild,” she says. “We have good insurance.”

Besides dozens of TVs for watching games, Doc & Eddy’s offered several pool tables, air hockey, and video games. It also hosted karaoke and trivia nights weekly.
