Popular Phoenix eatery Tacos Chiwas expanding to Chandler this summer

Huge news for East Valley taco lovers! Tacos Chiwas, considered by many aficionados to make the best tacos in Phoenix, is coming to Chandler this summer.

The husband-and-wife team of Armando Hernandez and Nadia Holguin debuted Tacos Chiwas on the southwest corner of 20th Street and McDowell in March 2016.

The small, casual shop has garnered rave reviews for its Chihuahuan-style tacos. Tortillas are hand-pressed and cooked to order. Fillings include carne asada, pastor, carnitas, chicken, beef tongue, and tripe.

Tacos are $2.50. Gorditas ($3), burritos ($5.50), and quesadillas ($3.50) also are available.

Hernandez and Holguin partnered with pizza guru Chris Bianco – Hernandez used to work for Bianco – on the critically acclaimed Roland’s Market, a Mexican-Italian hybrid concept that closed in February after just 10 months.

The threesome also collaborated on two eateries at the Graduate Hotel in Tempe last year.

Now, Hernandez and Holguin are turning their attention to expanding the Tacos Chiwas brand. They’ve taken over the strip-mall space that formerly was home to FrinGo’s on the northwest corner of Alma School and Warner.

FrinGo’s, a well-regarded Puerto Rican restaurant, closed in 2017.

Holguin says they’re waiting on health department permits, but hope to open Tacos Chiwas Chandler in June.
