Sakura Sushi reopens Ahwatukee location after federal raid

🍣 Sakura Sushi, which closed its three popular East Valley locations last month after its owner was arrested on human trafficking charges, has reopened one of its all-you-can-eat restaurants.

The Ahwatukee location on the southwest corner of Elliott and 48th Street began serving diners again earlier this week.

The Ahwatukee restaurant – along with locations in Mesa and Gilbert as well as its sibling Akita Sushi in Scottsdale – were raided by federal law enforcement Dec. 10.

Owner Yung Lau, along with two managers (including his brother), were accused of harboring dozens of undocumented immigrants in four “stash houses” and forcing them to work seven days a week.

Lau admitted in an affidavit he hired unauthorized workers because it was hard to find workers, and that he knew it was wrong.

At his initial court appearance Dec. 30, Lau was charged with two criminal complaints and released on bond with the condition that he have no contact with anyone associated with the case.
