🚫 Sonsons Pasty is consolidating. The business got its start on the northeast corner of Recker and Brown in northeast Mesa eight years ago, but owner Julie Mercer has announced that location will close July 24 when its lease runs out.
The culprit is a familiar one for small businesses right now: rising costs eating into margins. Mercer says fuel prices have hit particularly hard, since Sonsons leans on farmers markets that require regular driving between events.
A slower winter tourist season – usually the cushion that carries shops through a sleepy summer – didn’t help either, leaving revenue on a steady decline this past year.
Sonsons’ Gilbert location on the northeast corner of McQueen and Warner, which opened in November 2022, will carry the torch alongside the farmers markets.
