The weekly five-course dinners, hosted by chef Romeo Taus and his wife, Janice, in a private dining room, typically highlight a rotating selection from the regular menu at Romeo’s Euro Cafe in Gilbert.

July 16 “Taste of Romeo’s” menu:

  • Bacon Skins: Crispy bacon topped with cheddar cheese. Served with yogurt dressing.
  • Chef Salad: Turkey, ham, Swiss and provolone cheese, bacon, artichokes heart, and olives on salad greens with feta dressing.
  • Goat Shrimp: Bacon-wrapped jumbo shrimp with feta and sun-dried tomato stuffing. Served with sauteed vegetables.
  • Penne Carbonara: Ham and bacon sauteed with red and green bell peppers in creamy cheese sauce with penne pasta.
  • Carrot Cake: Moist carrot-and-walnut cake layered with apricots and cream cheese icing.

Dinner starts at 6:30 p.m. Cost is $27 per person plus tax and tip. Add five wine tastes for $10. RSVP: 480-962-4224.

At 5 p.m. today, Uncle Bear’s Brewery from Ahwatukee will stage a tap takeover at The Monastery in east Mesa.

The 10 beers on tap will be:

  • Mandarin Wheat
  • Honey G golden ale
  • Head To Tale amber
  • Accidental amber
  • Dog Park dark
  • Mango Jo saison
  • Farm House Dog imperial saison
  • Rye Down pale
  • OB West Coast IPA
  • The Mutt’s Nuts DIPA

Mango Jo is the brewery’s newest beer, just introduced on Thursday.

I finally got my hands on the tap list for this year’s Feast of St. Arnold, which will be held Saturday at Fibber Magees Irish pub in Chandler.

St. Arnold, of course, is the patron saint of Belgian brewers and hop-pickers. The all-day indoor fest, which starts at 11 a.m., is one of Fibber Magees’ biggest events of the year.

Here are the 40 highly rated beers (with prices) that will be on tap (click here to see larger version):

The list includes some high-octane offerings, including Goose Island Bourbon County Stout (14.2% ABV), Hanger 24 Barrel Roll Hammerhead (13.8%), and Firestone Walker Sucaba (12.8%).

Prices range as high as $8.75 for Destihl Clarice, but 26 of the 40 beers will be $5.50 or less.

You also will be able to choose your own three-beer flights (4-ounce pours) for $12.

Post image for SanTan, Mother Road pick up medals at U.S. Open Beer Championship

Congrats to SanTan Brewing, whose HopShock IPA won a gold medal at the U.S. Open Beer Championships in Oxford, Ohio.

The competition drew nearly 4,000 beers in 90 different styles from around the world.

HopShock took top honors in the IPA category, edging out PsycHOPathy from Madtree Brewing in Ohio and Hopsecutioner from Terrapin Beer in Georgia.

The only other medalist from Arizona was Flagstaff’s Mother Road, whose Roadside won the silver medal in the English Pale Ale category.

JC’s Steakhouse in Gilbert will hold its monthly wine tasting at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

This month’s focus will be on French wines. The food and wine pairings:

  • Jean-Luc Colombo Cotes du Rhone, Les Abeilles Rouge, paired with Coquilles St Jacques (scallop), Steak Tartare, and Magrets de Canard (duck breast).
  • Novellum Chardonnay paired with Roasted Pear Salad.
  • The Seeker Pinot Noir paired with Aligot, Coq au Vin, and Ratatoulle.
  • Domaine de la Fruitiere Les Vignes Blanches paired with Lemon and Fresh Raspberry Dacquoise.

Learn about the history, methods, grapes, regions, and types of sparkling wines from around the world when My Wine Cellar holds a two-week Bubbles Class.

In celebration of National Hot Dog Month, Wimpy’s Paradise and Pittsburgh Willy’s are selling 6-inch, all-beef hot dogs based on the previous day’s high temperature.

For example, if the official high temperature at Phoenix Sky Harbor reaches 108, the following day hot dogs will be $1.08.

The special will continue through July. There’s a limit of two hot dogs per person, and it’s dine-in only.

The temporarily merged eateries also will be selling chili ’n’ cheese dogs for $2, or three for $5, all month.
